THE PROBLEM

Sherun Old Folk’s Home and Handicap Centre is an active, non-profit charity centre that has been providing care and refuge to vulnerable senior citizens at ‘Bandar Selesa Jaya’ in Johor Bahru since their establishment in August 2001. They are dedicated to provide the senior citizens with a warm and safe shelter regardless of their race and gender, and are dedicated to help maintain their well-being through the provision of assisted living. This includes assisting them in activities of daily living and participation in social engagements.

Currently, they are home to 60 senior citizens, in which some of them are in special conditions. The home is committed to look after them carefully and is willing to help them achieve their utmost health by encouraging healthy lifestyle and by being on standby for any pharmaceutical support that the senior citizens may need. By providing an affectionate residential care, the home aims to provide the senior citizens with hope for their future.

Elderlies are usually associated with outdated stereotypes which can lead to isolation and marginalisation in some communities.  Alzheimers is also known as the most common form of dementia amongst the older people. Hence, The Old Folk’s Home Visit is an event collaboration between the Asian Medical Students Association (AMSA) and Volunteer to Aspire Generations (VOLTAGE) societies, where we aim to provide volunteers the opportunity to interact with the elderlies and provide the elderlies with a sense of companionship as a way to celebrate International Day for Older People. This interaction would hopefully encourage an increase in the volunteers’ sense of empathy towards the society and alleviate any negative stereotypes towards the senior citizens. This would in turn hopefully help encourage the elderlies to feel appreciated regarding their contribution to the society through the donations and activities that we plan to entertain the elderlies with. We also plan to conduct activities that can enhance the elderlies’ memory.

THE SOLUTION

By fundraising for the Sherun Old Folk's Home and Handicap Centre, we strive to provide them with more basic needs and necessaries in terms of food, clothings, cleaning tools, self-hygiene products and basic medical items.

We will be conducting a spring cleaning to ensure they have a comfortable and pleasant home as well as activities and interactions with the elderlies. We hope to spread kindness and positivity to the society and express our appreciation to the elderlies.

THE IMPACT

Donations will be given in the form of aids to the home upon our visit and fundraising activities will be done prior to raise money for the donations. Through the fundraising activities, we hope that this could be a way for the NUMed community to contribute positive actions to the external society, and would hopefully increase their awareness regarding challenges against negative stereotyping and alzheimers in older people.

We believe that all donations given will help fulfil the older people’s needs which can improve their healthy lifestyle.  Hence, We highly appreciate all the donations that you contribute towards the home!

About the Organization/Project behind this Campaign

VOLTAGE NUMed

VOLTAGE - Volunteer To Aspire Generations is a student club from Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia that aims to help the community surrounding us with a unified goal to seek the best in humanity and help those who need it the most. We are a well-known community service club based in NUMed, involved actively in a wide range of volunteer projects. This year we plan on hosting multiple in-person events to make up for what we lost during the COVID-19 pandemic. In previous years, we have had weekly volunteering activities across Johor, including Project GUIDE, Project HOPE, Soup Kitchen and Project Cerebral Palsy as well as our main volunteer event, PROJECT SEED. As a result of our vast number of projects, we have won Society Contribution and Outstanding Contribution to the Community Awards from Newcastle UK 2020 and Society of the Year 2018/19 Award from NUMed.
