THE PROBLEM

There are concerns that many people may not be using the face masks correctly and following the advised procedures to ensure their effectiveness in minimizing the risk of the virus. This situation is worsening with the poor families where they are not able to spend their little money on buying the facemask.  In a hurry and focusing on their daily wages, most of the families are curious about the limit of spending. Their economic situation makes them tend to take the risk of using the same facemask repeatedly for a long period of time. Those who wear reusable face masks are actually at high risk for not maintaining them in a way that is helpful in stopping the spread of coronavirus. Added with having more school-going children, each of the children requires at least 2 facemasks. The parents are not serious about the negative result that this habit could affect everyone only because lack of awareness and their low-income situation.

THE SOLUTION

In order to solve the above-mentioned problem, PSPK took the initiative to launch this campaign. This campaign is to provide free cloth facemask to school-going children and their parents living in Taman Selayang Makmur Flat, - a low-cost flat in Gombak District and its surrounding area. This flat consists of all races of Malaysian and Refugees community and most of them are daily wages earners. PSPK has identified 320 students-around 130 families, as the beneficiaries of this campaign. Upon receiving this free reusable cloth facemask for their children, and for themselves, the parents are taught on how to how to maintain a clean facemask in order to maximize their effectiveness in reducing the risk of transmission of COVID-19 and teach them that reusable face masks should be removed and how to regularly wash the cloth facemask. This knowledge would spread among the other community members and PSPK will take the efforts to have continuous engagement with the community.

THE IMPACT

This campaign is an effort to bring awareness among the parents and the B40 community who mainly lives here as an urban poor community. Besides supporting the B40 students and the parents with facemasks, this campaign will also give an opportunity for PSPK Mothers Tailoring Enterprise which is a social enterprise that is managed a community of mothers in tailoring production for their income generation which is one of the women empowerment and sustainability program. For this campaign, the mothers are given the opportunity to produce 450 reusable cloth face masks.  Every 2 pieces of face mask cost RM 20, and for every RM 20 raised on this project, PSPK will match the donation to provide the facemask to a student and parent.

When you donate to this initiative, you are not only sponsoring the needy with free reusable cloth face masks but you are also supporting the livelihoods of a community of mothers who are sewing these face masks to support their families and to be self-sufficient by creating awareness to educate the community. In the future, PSPK will continue the services in monitoring and educating the community to live a safe and healthy life.
