THE PROBLEM
HELP US TO REACH OUR NEW GOAL OF RM10,000
WHO reported that there are 800,000 people that die by suicide each year. For every suicide, there are many more people who attempt suicide every year. A prior suicide attempt is the single most important risk factor for suicide in the general population. Suicide is the third leading cause of death in 15-19-year-olds and 79% of global suicides occur in low- and middle-income countries.
In Malaysia, the recent 2019 National Health & Morbidity Survey reported that 2.3% (1/2 a million people) of the Malaysian population have depression with more 400,000 children are found to have a form of mental health problems.
THE SOLUTION
What we do?
Befrienders Kuching provides a free phone helpline and email services to the public especially to those feeling suicidal or in general distress. Callers are able to call our suicide hotline (082-242800 from 6.30pm - 9.30pm daily) for free from all major telco companies (TM, Digi, Maxis and more) as well as emailing us at sam@befrienderskch.org.my.
Besides our core services, we also run outreach and training programmes across Kuching and around the Sarawak region and engaging with the communities and raising awareness on suicide prevention & mental health literacy. We work together with government agencies as well as other local NGOs to reach out to the different communities in our region which include schools, businesses, and the general public)

Befrienders has centres across Malaysia (KL, Malacca, Penang, Johor Bahru, Ipoh, Seremban, Muar, Kota Kinabalu & Kuching). How does your donation help?
Your donation helps us to sustain the operations of our services. Donations will be used to cover our phone bills, internet, office rental spaces, and many more. On top of that, your donations will also help us to reach out to the communities by conducting outreach programmes to schools, businesses and the general public.
OPERATING COSTS
We spend approximately RM400 - RM600 per month to operate our phone and email services. In order for us to continue running our services, it would cost about RM8,000 a year to run our services.

THE IMPACT
We hope that every donation will be put to good use to reach out to the local communities. Through our phone & email services, we will be able to reach out to those who need a listening ear as well as through our outreach programmes, we will be able to raise more awareness on suicide prevention and mental health issues within the region.
