THE PROBLEM

There is an increasing prevalence of cancer in the country and globally. The second leading cause of death in the world is cancer which has caused an estimated 9.6 million deaths in 2018. In Malaysia, the fourth primary cause of death is cancer which have contributed to 12.6% of all deaths in government hospitals and 26.7% in private hospitals. The percentage of cancer cases detected in Stages 3 and 4 rose from 58.7 percent from 2007 to 2011 to 63.7 per cent in 2012 to 2016. The rise in the cancer cases in Malaysia has been attributed to the lack of public awareness and access to early detection and treatment as stated by the Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah in the International Society of Surgery’s (ISS) World Congress of Surgery 2019. In addition, the problem of insufficient funds for cancer research in Malaysia is still prevalent despite having a cancer research organization.

THE SOLUTION

In this campaign and project, we will be creating social media content to be posted on both our social media (Instagram and Facebook). This is mainly to promote health via raising awareness about cancer and Cancer Research Malaysia as well as the importance of early detection.

Cancer Research Malaysia, the organisation which has supported us in this project, has been seeking for funds for their research in cancer. Hence, via this project, we hope that we are able to contribute towards cancer research via this online crowdfunding.

About the Organization/Project behind this Campaign

KNOW Cancer for NO Cancer

According to estimates from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), there were approximately 14.1 million new cancer cases and 8.2 million total cancer deaths in 2012 worldwide. In Malaysia, there were 103,570 new cancer cases, alongside 64,275 cancer deaths reported between 2007-2011 according to the National Cancer Registry.

In this project, we will be raising awareness regarding early detection of cancer as well as Cancer Research Malaysia through various contents posted on social media such as Instagram and Facebook. The project will be conducted over a period of 5 weeks. This project is conducted by a group of Year 4 Pharmacy Students from Taylor's University under Community Service Module, supported by Cancer Research Malaysia.
