THE PROBLEM
It's time we get serious about food waste.
In 2019, according to the statistic collected by Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Corporation (SWCorp), Malaysians discarded up to 16,688 tonnes of food daily which could feed 12 million people a day. On top of that, the amount rises by 15 to 20% every festive season. For instance, about 4,005 tonnes of food are thrown away in landfills every day during Ramadan. In 2020, according to SWCorp, the total amount of food waste can certainly fill up 16 twin towers. Things become worse when the sudden rise of COVID-19. 80% of the waste is contributed by the unused parts of fruits and vegetables in food preparation, whereas the remaining 20% is contributed by left-over food generated by consumers. Similar waste is generated by domestic households during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Some of us at Sunway University have had enough.
THE SOLUTION
Save and Serve, modeled after AIESEC in Malaysia’s project, which goes by Clean Our Plate, aims to promote SDG 12 by carrying out key activities, such as:
1. Conducting Research
2. Composting And Enzyme Making
3. Fundraising
4. Marketing Insightful and Entertaining Resources
All of which will empower citizens to take feasible action during the ongoing pandemic!
THE IMPACT
The funds gathered from this initiative will be put to good use in providing food relief through our partner, Green Hero!
With the RM1,000 that we collect, we aim to serve 19 Malaysian households, each will receive our customized Food Relief Package:
