THE PROBLEM

NATIONAL STROKE ASSOCIATION OF MALAYSIA

Appeal for Funding to tide us through the uncertainties of the Covid Pandemic

The National Stroke Association of Malaysia (NASAM) and our community of stroke survivors nationwide would like to appeal to the public for financial assistance to help sustain our operations and to avoid the closure of our 9 stroke rehab centres throughout Malaysia.

NASAM is a non-profit organization which depends on the generosity and goodwill of corporate as well as individual donors. During pre-covid days, we were active in organising physical fundraising events like the annual food & fun fair as well as walkathons, to sustain ourselves. However, we are now unable to run those programs due to the pandemic.

NASAM was set up 24 years ago with the aim of providing stroke rehabilitation (physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and counselling) to help stroke survivors return to as normal a life as possible after a devastating stroke and secondly, to raise public awareness on the prevention of stroke.

Due to the pandemic, the whole world is facing a multitude of difficulties and it is all the more challenging for stroke survivors and their families and caregivers. The difficulty in coping with the pandemic has substantially affected their focus and priority on stroke rehab. Stroke survivors and caregivers have fear of going out and this contribute to a drop in number of stroke survivors coming to NASAM for stroke rehab. With their comorbidities, they are also very vulnerable to covid risks, hence staying home may be safest for them. This in turn has severely eroded our income and financial resources and affected NASAM’s survivability, going forward.

We appeal to all of you with the hope that you will support us by funding our day-to-day operations. Our operational cost currently to run all 9 stroke centres exceeds RM2.2 million annually. Please help us so that we do not have to close NASAM centres for good and so that we can continue to serve the stroke community nationwide.

Due to the pandemic, we also have had to modify the way we operate which adheres to the Ministry of Health’s standard operating procedures involving the additional purchase of protective equipment such as face masks, face shields, gloves, protective suits/gowns/aprons, sanitisers, disinfectant materials and others. We are also unable to conduct physical group rehab which severely affects our income from stroke survivors. We have quickly adapted our operational methods and are now encouraging more stroke survivors to do online telerehab programs with us but this new approach takes time to build up. Moreover, stroke survivors need to have access to internet and smart gadgets in order to join us in online telerehab.

Since our inception in 1996, we have expanded our operation from a first centre in Petaling Jaya to 8 others today in Penang, Kota Kinabalu, Ampang, Melaka, Ipoh, Johor Bahru, Kuantan and Kulim (Kedah). Our team of qualified physiotherapists and support staff are engaged daily in providing rehabilitation therapy sessions to between 200 - 300 stroke survivors. Through our services, many have discovered hope and a 2nd chance at Life after Stroke. Early rehabilitation is absolutely crucial in reducing permanent disabilities and many have recovered sufficiently to return to their jobs.

In Malaysia, over 50,000 cases of stroke are reported each year. Stroke is now the 3rd main cause of death. Statistics also show that 1 in 4 persons will have a stroke in their lifetime, which is an alarming fact. On a global scale, around 17 million people suffer stroke each year. However, stroke is in fact the most preventable of all non-communicable illnesses.

Please help save NASAM. We thank you all sincerely. Stay safe and healthy.

THE SOLUTION

We hope generous donors will come forward to help sustain NASAM's operations so that we may be able to continue serving the stroke community in Malaysia, and not have to close all NASAM stroke centres permanently after a long, established history of 24 years.

THE IMPACT

NASAM will then be able to serve stroke survivors, help them recover and provide them with a second chance at Life after Stroke. Stroke is devastating but it is the most preventable of all non-communicable illnesses. Immediate rehabilitation is crucial to stroke recovery to prevent permanent disabilities.

NASAM provides a holistic recovery journey that includes physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and emotional therapy (counselling). We also provide caregivers support to families of stroke survivors.

NASAM is like a home away from home which during the pre-Covid days, involves lots of group rehab therapy such as physiotherapy, art and craft, cooking, festive celebrations, yoga, tai chi, hydrotherapy, gardening, caregivers' sharing sessions, mentor-mentee programs, etc.

We conduct face-to-face one-on-one rehab therapy as well as group therapy where stroke survivors get to bond with one another, encourage one another to recover and enjoy the camaraderie which help to allay the fear, anger, frustration, depression as well as suicidal thoughts.

Due to the pandemic, we have had to adapt to different ways of during rehabilitation. One of which is TeleRehab i.e. online rehabilitation which will ensure that stroke survivors stay safe at home and do their rehab within the comforts of their homes. However, in order for this to take place, stroke survivors must have access to internet and smart gadgets.

A successful campaign will ensure that NASAM does not need to close down its operations permanently, and that we will be able to serve and help stroke survivors recover.

Our tagline is There is Life after Stroke. So, don't give up !

About the Organization/Project behind this Campaign

National Stroke Association of Malaysia

National Stroke Association of Malaysia is a non-profit non-governmental organisation set up 25 years ago in 1996 to provide stroke rehabilitation (physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, counselling) to stroke survivors and to raise public awareness in stroke prevention. We have touched the lives of thousands of stroke survivors all these years. Many have recovered and returned to work, overcome depression and been re-integrated back to society. We strongly believe that "THERE IS LIFE AFTER STROKE". Although stroke is devastating, acting F.A.S.T. after a stroke and early rehabilitation can prevent permanent disability.

Our finances have been seriously affected by the pandemic and our reserves are sharply depleting, to the extent that it is threatening the permanent closure of all our 8 stroke centres. All this despite our cost-cutting measures including salary cuts, appeals for rental reductions, etc. We now require urgent assistance and we humbly seek all of your generous support to prevent the closure of NASAM and to allow us to continue helping more stroke survivors and their families for years to come.

On behalf of our stroke survivors, we Thank You !
