The Story

Covid-19 and the resulting MCO have affected MALAYSIANS from all walks of life.

Some of you like me, the more fortunate ones, have the luxury to weather this storm with the support of friends and families in the safety of our own homes.

However, this is not the case for our most vulnerable communities. Orphans, elderly, homeless, differently-abled, refugees, among others, are struggling to survive this pandemic. They are overlooked and not getting the assistance needed fast enough. It breaks my heart every time I read about their plights 💔.

I want to help, especially the most stricken ones, but with so many charity appeals, it is hard to prioritise or verify which to support.

Whilst researching, I found NGOhub, this non-profit platform that supports and fundraises for over 500 (and counting) verified NGOs. From their work on the ground, they are able to identify and determine those desperately in need and assist them with raising emergency funds. Giving through them provided me the comfort in knowing that my donation will go to the most needed.

However, I still can't help feeling that there is certainly more I can do than just making a donation from the confinement of my desk.

Seeing how everyone is now spending more time on social media and taking up video challenges, this gave me the idea of using these popular tools to raise awareness and donations with NGOhub. Not to reinvent the wheel, I came up with a blueprint drawing inspiration from two very successful viral charity drives, the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge and the Movember Campaign.

I put this into motion by asking for help on social media and was encouraged by the number of friends who shared the same sentiments. I was extremely grateful that so many of them offered their expertise and help pro bono to make #SignUp4MY a reality.

The #SignUp4MY challenge is designed for easy participation with the hope of virality. As a CHALLENGER, all you need to do is to share a video of you signing out the slogan "Hello Malaysia. We Are Here To Help. Jangan Panik. Kita Jaga Kita." in Bahasa Isyarat Malaysia (BIM).

The reason for using BIM is because I wanted to give the challenge more heart and also to recognise the very people that this initiative is created to help.
