Taking Action Towards The SDGs: A CROWDFUNDING MOVEMENT by iGV

The Story

We are from AIESEC in Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS). We have a vision of empowering the youth of East Malaysia in the field of sustainable community development and this is reflected in our stand “We Empower And Cultivate Youth Leadership While Preserving The Authenticity Of The Land Below The Wind”. 

We mainly focus on contributing towards 2 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), Quality Education (SDG 4) and Life Below Water (SDG 14). Quality of education is a foundation of the development of society and as a developing nation, Malaysia is in need of a strong and sustainable education system to equip its young citizens with knowledge, values and skills for more life opportunities. While the Malaysian population that has received high education has grown throughout the years, Malaysian students are falling behind their peers in the country's regional neighbours. English proficiency and STEM knowledge are two important factors of employability in the 21st century. This is especially true in an era where the COVID-19 pandemic has struck the world. 

Education is not the only thing that needs our attention during this pandemic. Over the years, there has been a lot of threats to the marine environment and it is degrading faster than ever. While everyone is focusing on curbing the pandemic, the neglect of marine issues such as the destruction of coral reefs, fish bombing and plastic pollution has deteriorated our once beautiful seas. With so much threatening our marine environment, we believe that immediate action should be taken by as many people as possible.

That is why we at AIESEC in UMS started two projects to tackle the challenges faced by each SDG, namely Speak Up Sabah (SDG 4) and Nature Warrior (SDG 14). We help contribute towards the SDGs by making an impact on the local community while simultaneously developing youth leadership among our volunteers through challenging environments. We are well aware that we can only do so much with our own efforts and that is why we want to involve you to be part of the greater good. Any amount of donation will be greatly appreciated no matter how small it is because we believe that small things when accumulated will bring forth something amazing. You are the very reason that our projects can continue to bring impact to the local community so let us be part of the movement together to bring a greater impact towards the community!

This crowdfunding campaign is held in partnership with Sabah Human Rights Centre (SHRC) as our learning partner which advocates on human rights issues in Sabah. We will donate 30% of Speak Up Sabah's crowdfunded amount to help the B40 students in SM St. Michael!
