Clean Our Plate - Ending Hunger Pandemic

The Story

My name is Suruthisya and I am currently 18 years old. I am doing my A-Levels at Sunway College. Growing up, I have always had a soft spot for people and always tried to help as much as I could. My passion for helping out people grew stronger since Covid-19 began as I witnessed many families suffering. To help, I decided to do small food donation drives around my place and I was happy that I could help people, even if it was a small number. When I came across AIESEC, I got to know that they were having a food waste awareness project. Immediately, I signed up for the project because I know it means I will be playing a role in providing food for many underprivileged families, more than what I did previously.

Since the Covid-19 pandemic began, vulnerable communities around the world have been sending a clear, urgent and repeated message: “Hunger may kill us before coronavirus”. In our deeply unequal world, millions of people are living in, and dying from food deprivation every year. Last year, Oxfam warned that the “hunger virus” could prove more deadly than Covid-19. The estimated number of people living in extreme poverty is projected to reach 745 million by the end of 2021, an increase of 100 million since the pandemic started.

When I got to know about this issue in detail, my heart ached. I didn't realise how many families went to bed with an empty stomach or when was the last time they had a proper, healthy meal. No one deserves to go through this no matter what.

In a nutshell, all I'm asking is for us to work together to help feed the unprivileged. This is an opportunity to be part of the change. Everyone's so busy with their life that they barely have had time to care for those who are suffering. You can change that! We don't need to have deep pockets or be rich to help the needy, the poor and the hungry, we need to have a heart!
