The Story

HELLO!

Hi! My name is Rui Fang; a student in architecture, UCTS. I am a volunteer for AISEC's GFGI (Get fit, Get Inclusive). I've dedicated myself to this campaign as the special needs community in Malaysia is constantly undermined, undervalued and overlooked(even in design) especially right now in the middle of the pandemic. In an effort to lift the stigma and rise awareness, I will do all I possibly can to aid them! One of it being through this fundraising.

GFGI is a non-profit campaign dedicated to empower (enable the community with self-sufficient skills), lift (boost representation in the public eye) and raise awareness (educate the public and spread the love) regarding the special needs community in Malaysia in support of Goal 10: Reduced inequalities act by the united nations.

FUNDRAISING FOR THE SPECIAL NEEDS

This campaign is a fundraiser made for the  ‘’IMC Training Center For The Special Needs’ in Subang, Selangor. They are an NGO operated by a couple and a team of volunteers striving to provide academic, lifestyle, physiotheraphy and sports for the special needs community.

With an experience of nearly 20 years and an estimated number of 50 students (flucuates, as some will go home while there are some orphans under their care) their inclusivity extends to those on the Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Down’s Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, etc.

Their major annual events for the community includes the Special Needs Children Camp, Tele-match & Sports Carnival, Pan-Disability Football Coaching & International Tournaments for Blind, Cerebral Palsy, Intellectually Disabled, Amputees.

OUR CAUSE

We strive to help the community as much as we can as the special needs awareness among the Malaysian public is unsatisfactory and borderline discriminatory, as can be seen in a study conducted by UNICEF in 2017,

‘’ children with disabilities in Malaysia are often hidden, portrayed negatively, and excluded from society. ‘’

And further information highlighted that,

‘’ 58% of Malaysians surveyed feel under-informed about disability’’

‘’1 in 3 Malaysians believed that children with disabilities should be kept hidden.’’

Special needs children in Malaysia face daily stigma and discrimination.

43% of Malaysians surveyed commenting that they felt children with disabilities would be disruptive in a mainstream class

HURDLES OF THE PANDEMIC

With the added on hurdles of the COVID-19 pandemic, the problems the community faces accelerates, with challenges ranging from the lack of volunteer manpower, donations (food, money, utilities), SOP adherences, things are tough and running dry. The center is unable to operate as efficiently and smoothly to aid and support the number of special needs orphans and children under their guardianship.

Through a variety of initiatives such as workshops and webinars aimed towards the special needs, social activism and fundraising (you are here!), we will be able to at least offer a form of comfort in these needing times. For your interest, you can check them out on our GFGI instagram page.

The funds raised for this project will majority go to IMC Training Centre For Special Needs and a portion will be going to the Get Fit, Get Inclusive (GFGI) Project. The funds for GFGI will then be allocated for further workshops, webinars, collaboration with our other partners in the community and for further projects down in the future.

It is in our immense joy and gratitude for your help! Godspeed!
