The Story

Hi everyone! It’s Shasha and Michelle from AIESEC in Sunway, we are volunteers for the Empowering Equalities project. This project is in accordance with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 10.2 which emphasises on reducing inequality. It aims to encourage inclusivity towards Malaysia’s refugee community by providing learning opportunities. We both share the same value of equality and justice as we believe education and access to basic necessities should not be a privilege regardless of nationality, gender, religion or any other status.

Across the globe, an innumerable number of individuals and families are forced to flee their homes to foreign countries where they have to adapt to different circumstances with little to no help. There are approximately 82.4 million refugees where almost 200,000 are displaced in Malaysia and 45,750 of them are around the age of 18. Can you imagine how it feels to be chased out of your own homes and lose the life you have now? Most of us are fortunate enough to not worry about issues like this, but some are barely surviving and do not have the opportunities that we do

According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Malaysia, refugee children are denied access to the formal education system and only 30% are enrolled in community learning centres. Even before the coronavirus pandemic, going to school was already a daily challenge for many refugee children, let alone during the pandemic. The pandemic has impacted the community even more as myriads of refugees struggle to find a job and lack sufficient income. Moreover, learning centres are in desperate need of funds to provide the best education and materials for refugee children.

Therefore it is indispensable to alleviate this issue and one of the many ways could be through donating. All donations will go to ElShaddai Refugee Learning Centre (ERLC) which is endorsed by United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Malaysia based in Klang, Selangor. These funds will be allocated to ensure quality education is provided. Let’s make a difference through this fundraising campaign to fight for equal education beyond borders!

Even a small contribution we make today can shape a better future for tomorrow :)

Thank you so much for your help!
