EDUCATION EMPOWERS REFUGEES

The Story

Hi guys, my name is Sugein and my partner's name is Zhan. We are currently doing a virtual volunteering programme organised by AIESEC in Sunway to help refugees in Malaysia. 

I chose the Empowering Equalities (EE) project as I am very unfamiliar with the refugee situation in Malaysia. After finding out that refugee children are not allowed to get a formal education in Malaysia I got more concerned that children are not getting a chance just because they fled from their country for their safety. 

My partner Zhan on the other hand chose the EE project as we wanted to be able to sympathize and understand the injustices in society. In his words, ‘Whilst some may value the refugee communities as a society in need. Most however disregard their presence and turn a blind eye. I help because I can’

We both agree that donations should be given as not as a sign of sympathy but a morale boost to them. We believe refugees should be given a chance to lead a life that creates opportunities for themselves that puts them on par with the rest of society.
