The Story

Hi everyone, this is Jenelle and Jun Yang. Currently, we are working on a month-long project on the Empowering Equalities program, which is aligned with the 10th SDG goal: Reduced Inequalities.

What is Empowering Equalities and who is benefiting from this program?

Empowering Equalities is a project started by AIESEC in Sunway that aims to help the refugee children to access learning opportunities and create awareness on the issues that the refugee communities are facing.

Do you know that there are around 180,000 refugees currently in Malaysia and almost 46,000 of them are below the age of 18? The refugees fled their country and came to Malaysia in hopes of a better life. However, our government does not recognise refugees so they cannot work legally or get education like the rest of us. They are currently relying on learning centres supported by NGOs but the pandemic has made it harder.

It is very heartbreaking to know that when we are having multiple devices to use alone for online learning, there are children who need to share devices and don't even have a stable internet connection to support their classes. The expenses to even attend classes are high too. All these have made us realise the harsh reality the refugees are in, which are rarely covered in the mainstream media. We believe the right to education is desperately needed in the community of refugees.

With your kind appreciation for the work we do, proper education will not be a luxury for the refugees, at least. So do help us!! We appreciate every penny.

*The funds will be going towards Elshaddai Learning Centre!*
