The Story

Hi! I am Maryam and I am currently volunteering for AIESEC in Sunway with the aim of helping children with special needs and addressing the stigma around the special needs community.

But Why?

We all have discussed at some point how Covid-19 has impacted us but usually, our conversations don't include people with special needs. Honestly, neither did mine until recently when I came across a few articles that looked into this issue.

They shed light on the fact that many special needs children remain undiagnosed, unregistered, and out of school due to the stigma, and lack of knowledge and support. Many people view "disability" as the main barrier to participation and inclusion rather than the environmental and social barriers. Children with psychosocial and behavioural disabilities face greater stigma than those with physical disabilities due to a lack of social acceptance. Now, the shift to online learning has put many special needs children at risk of losing hard-won education gains. Many special needs children have still not been able to cope with the demands of online learning.

These issues are heartbreaking yet real. But how can they be addressed???

IMC is a training centre that aims to:

• Prepare the Special Children to develop the skills that will aid them in society.
• Instil good moral attitudes in them alongside a replenished sense of self-worth.

However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, a lack of donations is affecting their operation and making them unable to support the Special Children that are completely under their guardianship.
