THE PROBLEM

DID YOU KNOW?
WE ARE ON THE BRINK OF A HUNGER PANDEMIC.

Food wastage has always been a perpetual problem in Malaysia. According to SWCorp Malaysia (Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Corporation), the households sector accounts for 44.5% of the 16,667.5 tonnes of food waste generated in Malaysia daily. About 24% or 4,005 tonnes of the food waste is classified as still edible, with the quantity sufficient to provide three meals to 2,970,000 people for a day.

Truth to be told, the food waste scenario only got even worse when the pandemic hit at the start of this year. As a result of the Movement Control Order (MCO) lockdown, there was panic buying and over-purchasing of groceries and other necessities as consumers wanted to stock up on perishable foodstuff.  At the end of the day, many overbought food items are left unconsumed and expired to be discarded due to spoilage. Due to high organic content, food waste creates a variety of adverse effects on the environment. Food waste disposal through landfilling is estimated to increase the emission of greenhouse gases to 50% by the end of 2020. Greenhouse gases have far-ranging environmental and health effects, that causes climate change, food supply disruptions, and also contribute to respiratory disease from smog and air pollution that ultimately harms our habitat and wellness.

Every big change is contributed by many collective small actions. As Pope Francis says, “Throwing away food is like stealing from the table of those who are poor and hungry.” Little did we know that these overbought food could serve a hot and fresh meal for poorer communities that may lack access and the money to afford food in a time of crisis.

THE SOLUTION

We intend to engage young people to be part of the enabler to connect the community to the organisation in hopes of striving to empower the needy community during this pandemic. With this, funds raised will be used to purchase food items for the underprivileged end beneficiary, namely Rumah Victory Elderly Home that is located at Puchong. Rumah Victory Elderly Home is an elderly home with the residence of 70 elderly in total. The said centre has been heavily affected by this pandemic as there were tight restrictions for in-person visits, which in turn led to lesser events organised and lesser donations received. With this crowdfunding initiative, we hope to help resolve the said problems encountered and provide food supplies for the centre. This is so that the old age people are healthy, confident and able to see their personal care themselves.

About the Organization/Project behind this Campaign

AIESEC in Sunway

Our Identity

AIESEC is the world's largest non-profit youth-run organization. It is an international non-governmental not-for-profit organisation that provides young people with leadership development, cross-cultural global internships, and volunteer exchange experiences across the globe. The organization focuses on empowering young leaders to make a positive impact on society through actions.

Our Vision

AIESEC strives for Peace and Fulfilment of Humankind's Potential as an organisation.

In today’s context, ‘Peace’ does not necessarily mean only avoiding war. Peace can symbolise a world that does not have conflicts that arise from cultural, religious, or other aspects of differences in humanity. Peace can also symbolise being in harmony with yourself. AIESEC strives to build a world where people can work towards their own understanding of peace while respecting and understanding the views of others.

Through Fulfilment of Humankind’s Potential, AIESEC strives for a world where people can be the best version of themselves.

Our Action

We place our confidence in youth because they have the passion, dynamism and entrepreneurial spirit that are needed to shape the future. They have the responsibility to improve tomorrow by choosing who they will be today. Hence, AIESEC is a platform for young leaders to run projects that are aligned with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to ensure its relevance to the local community needs. We aim to be part of the solution for a betterment of Malaysia.
