Empower Gender Equality

The Story

Hi, I am Chrisvyn Visha, an A-Level student at Sunway College. I am currently volunteering for the 'Action for Equality(AFE)'  project by AIESEC in Sunway. In support of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals(SDG) Goal 5: Gender Equality, AFE aims to raise awareness of gender equality and empower all women and girls. This fundraising is an effort to support Non-governmental Organisations in their journey towards advocating for equality and discarding discrimination against women. 

Covid-19 has brought a massive backlash against women's rights and it is diminishing the outlook for gender equality. Given that the Sustainable Development Agenda is set for a 2030 deadline, the progress on this goal is not on track. According to UN Women's 2022 edition of their annual Gender Snapshot report, it is stated if the change continues at its current rate, gender equality will remain an unrealized goal for centuries. The report also states that approximately 1 in 10 women(12.5%) were subjected to sexual and physical violence by their partners last year. To end child marriage, progress needs to be made 17 times faster than it was to achieve the deadline set.

It is truly devastating that so many women are suffering from discrimination and violence against them every day. Without global commitment, this goal will remain unfulfilled. As global citizens, let's work together and contribute to fighting for gender equality. Thank you.
